How I’m Supplementing During Pregnancy

When I first found out that I was pregnant I slightly panicked because thoughts of nutritional deficiencies ran through my head. Was I getting enough calcium? How were my iron stores? Should I have been taking folic acid before I got pregnant and is it too late to catch up? With this being my first pregnancy I wasn’t extremely knowledgeable as to what the baby needed and how much. My diet had also been sporadic taking a multivitamin here and there.

After consulting with a few close friends and reading reviews about the many prenatal vitamins that are on the market today, I made the decision to go with MegaFood Baby & Me Prenatal Vitamins. I chose this brand in particular because they are formulated with whole foods and not synthetic vitamins or fillers. The fact that they were also gluten free, soy free, dairy free, vegetarian and non-GMO made me certain these were the ones that were right for me. They also could be taken on an empty stomach without any upset and that was a huge plus for me because I had pretty severe morning sickness well into my second trimester. And if that wasn’t convincing enough, MegaFood Baby & Me are one of the only prenatals I could find with folate and not the synthetic form folic acid.

MegaFood has three main supplements in their prenatal/postnatal supplement category:

  1. Baby & Me – the prenatal and post-natal supplement, meant for women who are trying, currently pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum
  2. Blood Builder – their vegan iron supplement, completely safe for pregnant women – iron needs actually double while pregnant! I just had mine checked and my levels are at a 9 and they are supposed to be at a minimum of 15 or higher. So this one is on me constantly to get my iron stores up. Gary even has some with him at all times for me.
  3. MegaFlora for Baby & Me – their probiotic supplement – I’ve been told that this is actually SUPER helpful for heartburn, but I can’t speak to it personally as I haven’t had much heartburn.

I basically started taking prenatal vitamins as soon as I knew I was pregnant. I wish I had started taking them earlier so my body was a bit more prepared but sometimes life happens and you have to roll with it.  I like to keep my vitamins on the counter so I remember to take them every day because you know it’s easy to forget especially with pregnancy brain!

I will continue taking them while I breastfeed and long after as we will probably will try for another baby at some point. They are great to replenish your stores after giving birth because the baby does take a lot from you. Next time around I will definitely be more diligent and watch my iron levels because they dropped extremely low and once you become pregnant it is really difficult to get them up.

MegaFood supplements can be found on their site and are on SALE right now!! Click the link to shop these supplements here or for their Healthy Mama Bundle which gives you a bit of a deal if you’d like to purchase all 3!! I also found that you can purchase them online at well.ca and vitasave.ca. They are both verified online retailers and most natural health stores across Canada carry them such as Whole Foods, The Big Carrot and Choices Markets.

For any mama’s or expectant mama’s what are you doing to supplement your health during pregnancy? Are there any vitamins or supplements that you have found to be effective? I would love to hear from you in the comments below!!
